Scenario

QNAP Download Center and other QNAP apps, such as Q'center or Qfinder Pro, may indicate that there is a newer firmware version available for download for your NAS, but the following situations occur:

  1. When checking for updates via Control Panel > System > Firmware Update > Firmware Update (tab) > Check for Updates (button), the system indicates no firmware update is available.
  2. Qfinder Pro indicates a newer firmware version is available, but the system indicates that no firmware update is available.
  3. No notification for an available firmware update is received.
  4. Automatic firmware updates are enabled but the NAS is not updating to the newer firmware version.

Details

Certain firmware versions are released initially on QNAP Download Center and other QNAP apps, such as Q'Center, as a canary release. A canary firmware release is available for immediate manual download, but is yet not made available to NAS devices through any other update mechanism such Check For Updates or automatic updates. This is to allow an initial subset of users adopt the canary release and report any bugs or user feedback. Not all firmware versions are a canary release, only selected firmware versions are canary release. If the new firmware version is a canary release, then firmware will be made available to NAS devices in progressive stages according to the following table:

StageAvailability
Canary ReleaseDownload Center, Q'center
Stage 1
  • Download Center, Q'center
  • 25% of market NAS devices
Stage 2
  • Download Center, Q'center
  • 50% of market NAS devices
Stage 3
  • Download Center, Q'center
  • 100% of market NAS devices

When the firmware update is made available to your NAS device, then the following will result:

  1. The NAS can be updated to the new firmware version by checking for updates via Control Panel > System > Firmware Update > Firmware Update (tab) > Check for Updates (button).
  2. The NAS can be updated to the newest firmware version via Qfinder Pro.
  3. Notifications for an available firmware update will be received (if enabled).
  4. The NAS will automatically update to the new firmware version if automatic updates are enabled.
