How do I fix a stuck firmware update?

Last modified date: 2023-04-28

Applicable Products

  • All NAS Series
  • All QTS Firmware Versions
  • All QuTS Hero Firmware Versions

Scenario

During the firmware update process, update progress may come to a stop and the device may become unresponsive. This may be caused by a number things including, for example, a network disconnection.

Solution

Tip
Confirm that the firmware update process is stuck by first waiting a short amount of time, at least 15 minutes, and observing any further progress or change.

If the firmware update is stuck, force power off the device by pressing and holding the power button for 5 seconds and then power on the device. Since the firmware update process was interrupted the device may or may boot up. See below for further instructions:

If the NAS can boot up

If you are able to boot up the NAS, then a manual firmware update is necessary to recover the NAS. For details, see Manually upating the firmware.

If the NAS cannot boot up

If the NAS cannot be booted up, follow the instructions in this tutorial: Why won't my NAS boot after a firmware update?
