Is it possible by remote connection to the NAS via FTP to modify the files without the need of downloading and uploading the files?

Unfortunately it is not possible to edit a file directly in the NAS if you are connecting the NAS using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) protocols. This is a limitation in the protocol, As the protocol name indicated, it was designed for just transferring files from one device to another one. If you want to edit the files directly on the NAS You can use WebDav (Local network and remote access) or Samba through VPN connection to the NAS.
