Why are most features unavailable on the passive node of an HA cluster?

Applicable Products

  • QuTS hero h5.3.0 or later
  • High Availability Manager

Scenario

I have set up a high-availability (HA) cluster with my NAS devices. After logging in to the passive node, I noticed that most features and applications are unavailable, including most functions in High Availability Manager. Is this normal?

Root Cause

In an HA cluster, the active node provides services while the passive node only syncs data from the active node to ensure data consistency and system reliability. The passive node remains in standby mode and does not perform any services. Therefore, most system and configuration functions are restricted on the passive node.

Details

You can still access some applications on the passive node. However, the available features on these applications are mostly limited to specific viewing functions, including:

  • High Availability Manager
You can view the HA cluster status and node roles.
  • QuLog Center
You can check system event logs.
  • Notification Center
You can review the notification history.

All other services and settings are disabled, until the passive node becomes the active node through a failover or switchover.
