What are the operating system compatibility requirements for VJBOD?

Last modified date: 2025-11-27

Applicable Products

  • QTS, QuTS hero
  • Storage Manager, Storage & Snapshots

Overview

VJBOD (Virtual JBOD) lets you expand your QNAP NAS storage by using space from other QNAP NAS devices as local VJBOD disks. Because the remote storage is treated as local disks, system compatibility between the two NAS devices is required for full functionality.

Requirements

To use VJBOD, both NAS devices must run the same major version of the same operating system.

Note
In system version numbers, the first number is the major version, and the second number is the minor version.
For example, in "QTS 5.2.7", the major version is "5", and the minor version is "2".

Supported Combinations

  • Same operating system, same version
    For example:
    • QTS 5.2.0 and QTS 5.2.0
  • Same operating system, same major version, different minor versions
    For example:
    • QTS 5.1.0 and QTS 5.2.0
    • QuTS hero h5.0.0 and QuTS hero h5.1.0

Unsupported Combinations

  • Different operating systems
    For example:
    • QTS and QuTS hero
  • Same operating system, different major versions
    For example:
    • QTS 4.5.4 and QTS 5.0.0
    • QuTS hero h4.5.4 and QuTS hero h5.2.0

Troubleshooting

If you are unable to create or reconnect a VJBOD connection, this is often due to an operating system mismatch or network issue. Try the following steps:

  1. Ensure both NAS devices are running the same operating system.
For example, both are running QTS or both are running QuTS hero.
  2. Verify that both NAS devices are running the same major operating system version.
  3. Confirm that your network settings (including IP addresses) are configured correctly.

If you continue to experience issues, contact QNAP technical support for assistance.
