NAS cannot be accessed and the Status LED is flashing green. What should I do?

Last modified date: 2026-06-16

Applicable Products

  • QNAP NAS running with QTS or QuTS Hero system

Scenario

If your QNAP NAS suddenly becomes inaccessible and the Status LED is flashing green, the NAS may still be booting, may have lost its system configuration, or may be stuck because of a software, firmware, firewall, or application issue.

Note
If the Status LED is flashing red and green alternately, the NAS may be performing an important operation such as disk formatting, firmware update, RAID rebuilding, or capacity expansion.

What does a flashing green Status LED mean?

A green Status LED flashing every 0.5 seconds may indicate one of the following conditions:

Possible condition Description
System is booting up The NAS is still in the boot process and has not fully loaded.
System is not configured or disks are not formatted The system configuration may be missing, or the NAS may appear to be in an initial setup state.
System is stuck or has crashed The NAS may be unable to respond to network connections because of software, firmware, firewall, or application failure.

Solution

Step 1: Search for the NAS using Qfinder Pro

Do not rely only on a browser bookmark or an old IP address. After a restart, the router may assign a different IP address to the NAS.

  1. Install Qfinder Pro on a computer connected to the same local network as the NAS.
  2. Use Qfinder Pro to search for the NAS.
  3. Check the result:
    • If Qfinder Pro finds the NAS, check the displayed status.
    • If it shows that the system is not initialized, the system configuration may have been lost.
    • If it appears normal, try opening or logging in to the NAS through Qfinder Pro.
    • If Qfinder Pro cannot find the NAS, continue to Step 2.

Step 2: Perform a 3-second soft reset

A 3-second reset may help if QuFirewall blocked your computer or if the NAS network settings were changed unexpectedly.

  1. Keep the NAS powered on.
  2. Use a paper clip or similar tool to press and hold the Reset button on the back of the NAS for 3 seconds.
  3. Release the button immediately after you hear one beep.
  4. Use Qfinder Pro again to search for the NAS.

This reset does not delete the data stored on the disks. Based on the provided notes, it resets the administrator password to the default value, changes the system IP configuration back to DHCP, and disables the firewall.

Note
What is the default system administrator password for my NAS?

Step 3: Boot the NAS without disks

This test helps determine whether the issue is caused by disk failure, system partition damage, or NAS hardware failure.

Warning
Before removing the disks, label each disk slot clearly, such as Disk 1, Disk 2, and so on. The disks must be inserted back in the original order.

  1. Power off the NAS.
  2. Pull out all disk trays enough to disconnect the disks. You do not need to fully remove the disks from the trays.
  3. Power on the NAS without any disks installed.
  4. Wait and observe the boot process:
    • After about 1 to 2 minutes, you should hear one short beep.
    • After another 3 to 5 minutes, you should hear one long beep.
    • The Status LED should become solid green or show the expected boot-complete LED state.
  5. Open Qfinder Pro and search for the NAS.

Interpret the result

Result Meaning Next action
Qfinder Pro finds the NAS and shows that disks are not installed or the system is not initialized The NAS hardware is likely working. The issue may be related to the system partition or disks. Powering off the NAS, insert the original disks back one by one in the original order. Powering on NAS. Wait several minutes for Qfinder Pro to detect the system.
The NAS still flashes green without disks, does not beep, and cannot be found by Qfinder Pro The NAS motherboard, RAM, or built-in boot DOM may be damaged. Contact QNAP support for repair service.
