Can I recover data that I accidentally deleted from my NAS?

Scenario

You have accidentally deleted a file or folder from your NAS, and you want to know whether it can be recovered.

Solution

Step 1: Check the Recycle Bin

Deleted files are often moved to the Recycle Bin rather than removed immediately. Check it from File Station, or from the Recycle Bin icon on the desktop. If your file is there, you can restore it directly.

Step 2: Check for snapshots

If snapshots were enabled taken the file was deleted, you may be able to restore an earlier version of the folder or volume from a snapshot taken before the deletion. See Using Snapshots.

Step 3: Check for backup

If you have configured backup (for example, backing up data to another QNAP NAS, an external drive, or cloud storage), check if these locations still keep a copy of your file.

Recommendation

To reduce the chance of losing data to an accidental deletion in the future:

  • Ensure the Recycle Bin is enabled in Control Panel > Network & File Services > Recycle Bin.
  • Regularly take snapshots of your data. See Snapshots overview.
  • Keep at least one full backup of your data elsewhere: on another NAS, an external drive, or a cloud storage service. We recommend using Hybrid Backup Sync to back up your data.
