Overview
After a sudden power outage or voltage surge, your NAS may no longer be visible in Qfinder Pro, or accessible via the web interface, or bootable.
Possible symptoms may include:
- No LED activity or beep sounds during startup
- LEDs appear normal, but NAS is not reachable via LAN
- Drive LEDs blink abnormally or not at all
- NAS powers on but fails to complete boot
Root Cause
A QNAP NAS may fail to boot after an unexpected power loss due to:
- Corrupted internal firmware (DOM/Flash): If the firmware was being accessed or updated when power was lost, it may be damaged.
- Unstable or faulty drives: Drives with critical errors may prevent the NAS from completing system initialization.
- Interrupted firmware upgrade: If a power failure occurred during a firmware update, the system bootloader or OS may be incomplete.
- Network misconfiguration: DHCP or IP resets may result in the NAS not being reachable.
Solution
Step 1: Boot the NAS without any drives
- Power off the NAS.
- Remove all hard drives from the NAS.
- Power on the NAS without any drives inserted.
- If the NAS boots and you hear the beep: This confirms that the system firmware and hardware are working. Proceed to Step 2.
- If the NAS still does not boot: The issue could be a corrupted DOM or mainboard failure. Refer to the NAS Recovery Guide or contact QNAP Technical Support.
Step 2: Test the hard drives
- If the NAS boots without drives, the issue is likely related to the drives.
- Identify any drives previously flagged with SMART errors, abnormal noises, or system logs.
- Insert a drive that you believe is healthy and power on the NAS.
- Insert another drive and test again.
- Continue until you identify the drive (or multiple drives) that prevents successful boot.
Step 3: Restore system access
If the NAS boots successfully:
- Connect the NAS and your computer to the same subnet.
- Use Qfinder Pro to locate the NAS on your network.
- If the NAS is still not visible:
- Try a direct Ethernet connection with static IP address (e.g., NAS: 192.168.1.100 / PC: 192.168.1.101).
- Reset the NAS network settings by pressing and holding the reset button for 3 seconds. This only resets the admin password and IP settings.
- Do not perform a 10-second reset unless you understand its full impact.

QNAP NAS
