Nick Rains centralizes and future proofs his media storage for 4K and beyond

  • Introduction

Nick Rains is a professional photographer specializing in travel and documentary work. His photographs have been featured in publications such as Australian Geographic, Australian Photography Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Australian Geographic, Reader’s Digest and more. He has photographed a range of subjects, including sport, news, celebrities, industry, travel, fashion and portraits, as well as worked for commercial clients such as Shell, BBC, Orion, Ponant and the Australian Government.

Nick Rains Imaging operates with just 2 staff, Nick and his wife Janelle who runs the business side of things and maintains the image library.

  • Challenge

As the megapixels of cameras increases, and the resolution of videos moves from HD to 4K (and eventually 8K and beyond), photographers and videographers face the constant challenge of finding sufficient storage to both secure their existing libraries and to have room to accommodate their future projects.

With over 300,000 images and hundreds of hours of videos stored across multiple storage devices, Nick Rains required a high-performance solution to centralize and backup his library. Future proofing was vitally important so the storage could be scaled to meet future needs as they captured more content at higher resolutions.

To meet these challenges, Nick Rains looked to the QNAP TVS-1282T3, a high-performance Thunderbolt™ 3 NAS powered by Intel® Core™ i5/i7 quad-core processors that provides tremendous speed for multimedia storage. After configuring four drives in RAID 0 for video editing, and four drives in RAID 5, Rains was able to take great advantage of the TVS-1282T3's features.

  • Thunderbolt 3

The next-generation Thunderbolt 3 delivers bi-directional 20Gbps speed that enable fast backup and real-time editing on 4K video files.

  • Uncompromising performance

Powered by Intel i5/i7 quad-core processors with up to 64GB DDR4 RAM and SSD caching, the TVS-1282T3 provides industry-leading performance.

  • Expandable storage

The TVS-1282T3 natively supports eight 3.5-inch drives and can be expanded using Thunderbolt-based expansion enclosures to support up to fifty six 3.5-inch drives for incredible storage potential.

  • Backup solutions

The TVS-1282T3 provides numerous solutions for computers and mobile devices to automatically back up files and data. The integrated Hybrid Backup Sync app also consolidates backup, restoration and synchronization functions for easily transferring data to local, remote and cloud storage spaces.

Since adopting the TVS-1282T3, Nick Rains has reported over 50% increases in his productivity and work efficiency. This is in no doubt due to being able to deliver 4K video to Final Cut Pro in real time combined with being able to consolidate his storage library to one device. With the tremendous speed of importing files compared to traditional Ethernet and USB, Rains finds the TVS-1282T3 "blisteringly fast" with greater responsiveness. With enough space to fit his media library and current projects, and the potential to easily expand on demand, Nick Rains can continue focusing on creating award-winning projects instead of worrying about where to store them.
