Can another disk drive be added to a JBOD (RAID type)?

Last modified date: 2022-06-24

Applied models:

  • All NAS Series

Applied Firmware:

  • All QTS Firmware Versions

Scenario:

I have two 8TB ironwolf drives set up in JBOD. I wish to add a third 8TB ironwolf which I have installed. I can only add a new drive as "Single" as the option for JBOD is greyed out.

Answer:

It is not possible to expand a JBOD (RAID type) by adding another disk drive.

There is no RAID parity in JBOD, unlike in RAID1, RAID5, RAID6 RAID types which have RAID parity and therefore can be expanded.

If a new drive needs to be added to a JBOD, data must be copied or backed up to another storage device/location, and then need to delete the JBOD. Recreate the JBOD using all the disk drives.
