How to configure the default web URL port for containers and applications in Container Station 3?

Container Station helps you centrally build, run, and manage Docker containers and Docker Compose applications on your QNAP device.

You can specify a default port for each container and application that Container Station uses to automatically generate a URL to directly access the service. You can configure or modify the default web URL port either at any time.

This tutorial will explain the process of configuring the default port and accessing the service with the generated URL.

Adding a Default Web URL Port

Creating a Container With a Default Web URL Port

  1. Container Station
  2. On the menu, go to Containers.
  3. Click Create.

    The Create Container window opens.

  4. In the Image field, specify the name and version tag for an existing container.
    Note:

    You must separate the name and version with a colon (:).

  5. Click Next.
  6. Configure the container settings.

    Specify a container name that contains 2 – 64 characters, starts with a letter or number, and only contains the following characters:

    • Valid characters:: A–Z, a–z, 0–9

    • Valid special characters:: Hyphen (-), Underscore (_), or Period (.)

    Default web URL port

    Enable this setting and specify a port number.

    This should be the container port and not the published host port. For example, entering 80 for an NGINX container or 8080 for a Jenkins container.

    Note:

    The default web URL port is only used for the first connected network in the list.
  7. Click Next.
  8. Review the container settings and then click Finish.

Container Station creates the container and saves the default web URL port. You can now use the web shortcut link, see Accessing Services with a Web Shortcut Link.

Creating an Application With a Default Web URL Port

  1. Container Station
  2. On the menu, go to Applications.
  3. Click Create.

    The Create Application window opens.

  4. Configure the general settings.
    1. Specify the application name.
      Note:

      The application name can be 1 – 32 characters in length and contain any of the following characters:

      • Valid characters:: A–Z, a–z, 0–9

      • Valid special characters:: Hyphen (-) or Underscore (_)

    2. Enter the Docker Compose YAML.
  5. Configure the advanced settings.
    1. Click Advanced Settings.
    2. Go to the Default Web URL Port tab.
    3. Enable Default Web URL Port
    4. Specify a service to use as the web application.
    5. Specify the port number.
      Note:

      • This should be the container port and not the published host port. For example, entering 80 for an NGINX container or 8080 for a Jenkins container.

      • The default web URL port is only used for the first connected network in the list.

  6. Click Create.

Container Station creates the application and saves the default web URL port for the application and the specified container. You can now use the web shortcut link, see Accessing Services with a Web Shortcut Link.

Adding a Default Web URL Port to an Existing Container

  1. Container Station
  2. On the menu, go to Containers.
  3. Click a container name.
  4. Click Edit at the top of the panel.

    The Edit Container window opens.

  5. Go to the Network tab.
  6. Configure the container settings.

    Enable this setting and specify a port number.

    This should be the container port and not the published host port. For example, entering 80 for an NGINX container or 8080 for a Jenkins container.

  7. Click Apply.

  1. Container Station
  2. On the menu, go to Applications.
  3. Click an application name.
  4. Click Edit at the top of the panel.

    The Edit Application window opens.

  5. Go to the Default Web URL Port tab.
  6. Enable Default Web URL Port
  7. Select a service to use as the web application.
  8. Specify the port number.
    Note:

    • This should be the container port and not the published host port. For example, entering 80 for an NGINX container or 8080 for a Jenkins container.

    • The default web URL port is only used for the first connected network in the list.

  9. Click Apply.

Container Station edits the application and saves the default web URL port for the application and the specified container. You can now use the web shortcut link, see Accessing Services with a Web Shortcut Link.

Accessing Services with a Web Shortcut Link

Container Station only displays web shortcut links for services that have a valid web port and support communication via the HTTP or HTTPS protocols. The following process explains how to access the web page of your containers and applications.

Accessing Container Web Pages

You can access a container web page by opening Container Station, going to the Containers screen, and clicking the icon next to a container.

Accessing Application Web Pages

You can access an application web page by opening Container Station, going to the Applications screen, and clicking the link in the Web URL column.
