Why can’t I add an Azure SMB file share as a backup target in Hybrid Backup Sync?

Last modified date: 2025-11-05

Applicable Products

Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3)

Overview

When attempting to add an Azure SMB file share as a backup destination in Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3), you may find that the operation fails. This issue occurs due to a compatibility limitation in HBS 3: it does not support mounting Azure SMB file shares because they require a URL-based address format which HBS 3 cannot use.

Limitation

Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) does not currently support connecting to Azure SMB file shares as backup targets because it cannot mount SMB shares that require a URL-based address.
At this time, HBS 3 only supports backing up directly to Azure Storage (Blob storage).

Recommendation

To back up data to Microsoft Azure using HBS 3, please use an Azure Storage (Blob storage) space as your backup destination.
