After enabling zoning with the zoning configuration set to “1” (i.e., two zone groups) in JBOD Manager, why do all the disks in my SAS JBOD enclosure become disconnected?

The ports on a QNAP SAS expansion card are grouped into pairs. Normally, each port in a pair is assigned a unique HBA address. However, whenever both ports in the pair are connected to the same SAS JBOD enclosure, the system automatically assigns a single HBA address to be shared between both ports, resulting in a connection configuration known as link aggregation.
However, a single HBA address cannot receive information from two different zone groups. If the two ports sharing the same HBA address are connected to two different zone groups on the SAS JBOD enclosure, the system registers an error and all the disks become disconnected.
The solution to this problem depends on the QNAP SAS expansion card you are using:
- QXP-820S
- This card has two ports.
- Ports 1 and 2 share the same HBA address whenever they are connected to the same SAS JBOD enclosure.
- If you enable zoning, only one port can be connected or both ports must be connected to the same zone group on the SAS JBOD enclosure, but your host device would only be able to see the zone group it is connected to.
- We therefore recommend that you do not enable zoning with this card, unless you plan to split the disks to be used by two different host devices.
- QXP-1620S
- This card has four ports.
- The following pairs of ports share the same HBA address (within each pair) whenever they are connected to the same SAS JBOD enclosure:
- Ports 1 and 2
- Ports 3 and 4
- Make sure that the two ports sharing the same HBA address within each pair are connected to the same zone group.
