How to manage your email accounts using QmailAgent on QNAP NAS

Overview

QmailAgent is an online email client that allows users to access Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo, and other email accounts (including any IMAP server). Users can easily switch between accounts with the quick launch bar and complete functionality for composing, reading and organizing emails is provided. Files, photos and documents stored on the NAS can also be attached to emails. QmailAgent also supports automatically backing up all the server-based emails to the NAS upon logging in.

System Requirements

QmailAgent requires a QNAP NAS with QTS 4.2.2 (or later).

Supported QNAP NAS models: TS-x31, TS-x31+, TS-x31P, TS431U, TS-831X and x86-based QNAP NAS (including the TS-269H, TS-x51, TS-x51+, TS-x51A, TS-x53, TS-x53II, TS-x53A, TS-453mini, TVS-x63, TS-X63U, TS-x69, TS-x70, TVS-x71, TS-x79, TVS-x80, TVS-ECx80+, TVS-x82, and TDS-16489U). Please visit the QNAP website for more information. Due to high CPU usage, it is not recommended to use multiple email accounts with older ARM-based and Intel Atom-based NAS models. Follow these instructions for the first time setup of QmailAgent:

  1. Install QmailAgent
  2. Set up a login email account
  3. Manage your QmailAgent jobs
  4. Attach a file stored on your NAS to an email
  5. Back up email

1. Install QmailAgent

QmailAgent can be installed and enabled in the QTS App Center.

2. Set up a login email account

When you first open QmailAgent you will see the add email account page.



On the next page you can choose the type of email server that you will access.

Enter the email account information, including the display name, email address, password and where on the NAS to save your emails. You can choose to save attachments or not and where to save your attachments.

If you are adding a Gmail account, enter the display name, email address and where to save your emails. You can choose to save attachments or not and where to save your attachments.

The app must be authorized to access your Google account. Click “Google OAuth2” to open the Authorization page. (To learn more about OAuth, please visit: http://wikipedia.org/wiki/OAuth.)

Please note: If you have more than one email account, choose the same account that you set up to login to complete the authorization.

Your web browser will take you to Google OAuth authorization page. Select “Allow”.

Your web browser will redirect you back to QmailAgent. Click "Add" to complete Gmail login.

3. Manage your QmailAgent jobs

After logging in to an email account, the mailbox will display the quick start pages. These can be skipped if not needed.






The quick start pages can be viewed again by clicking > “Quick Start”.

After entering the email account, the mailbox will list every email in the currently-selected folder. It provides all of the functions necessary for reading, composing, replying, deleting and replying to emails.

Emails and attachments are downloaded as background tasks. When you sign in to an email account, QmailAgent will sync and download email folders.

Please note: Download limitations (and other security-related features) on your email server may cause QmailAgent to be unable to download all of these at once. You may need to re-authenticate your account after a few hours.

The toolbar (from left to right) includes: Select, Refresh, Create a new message, Reply to sender, Reply to list or to sender and all recipients, Forward the message (including inline and as attachment), Move message to trash, Print this message tag, Mark messages, and more.

Reading email: Click an email twice and the window will show the email's content. The preview pane appears below the message list and displays the currently-selected email. To view/hide the preview pane, click in the message list footer.


Switch/ Add other email accounts

Click to display the email account list. Here you can access another account.

In the account list, you can add another email account by clicking .

Choose the type of email server to add.

Delete / Edit email account

Select an account on the list and it will display the email account information. You can edit the name and other settings.

In the storage location settings, you can change where to save emails and attachments.

To remove the account from your NAS, click .

You will be asked to confirm the deletion of accounts. If you are currently using the account that you are deleting, QmailAgent will log out.

Importing/ Exporting contacts

Switch to the address book window, click "Import" on the toolbar, then go to the next step.

Select a .vcf or .csv file to upload then click "Import".

When exporting contacts, select contacts or a group.

Click "Export contacts in vCard format" and choose whether to export all contacts or selected ones. They will be downloaded to your current device.

4. Attach a file stored on your NAS to an email.

To attach a file when writing emails, click on the toolbar. You can choose to attach files “From NAS” or “From Local” (your current device).

In the folder window, select a file then click “OK” to upload it.


Click to open another new browser.

5. Backup email

Click “Backup” to browse backed-up emails.

Instant mode: All of the changes you make in this mode will be saved and applied to the emails on the email server.
Backup mode: Even if an email is deleted on the email server, you can still view its backup copy on the NAS.
