Root Cause

A common reason why users cannot access an external drive is because they are not logged in as an administrator or a user with access permission to the external drive.

By default, non-administrators are unable to access an external drive unless an administrator has given them access permission to that drive.

Solution

Log in as an administrator or contact an administrator to grant the non-administrator account access to the external drive.

  1. Log in to QTS or QuTS hero as an administrator.
  2. Plug the external drive into a USB port.
  3. Ensure the external drive is detected by the NAS.
    1. Open File Station.
    2. Verify the external drive appears in the navigation panel.
    3. If the external drive does not appear, plug the external drive into another USB port.
    4. Optional: Repeat the above steps until the external drive appears.
  4. Grant the non-administrator account access to the external drive.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders > Shared Folder.
    2. Locate the external drive in the list.
    3. Under Action, click the Edit Shared Folder Permission icon.
The Edit Shared Folder Permission window appears.
    4. Locate the non-administrator account.
    5. Select Read Only or Read/Write.
    6. Click Apply.
The non-administrator account can now access the external drive.
