AUXOUT
AUXOUT is a Tokyo-based Japanese content creator who has been creating works on YouTube under the theme of "Cinematic Vlog." His instructional videos on photography and filmmaking have achieved over 30 million views and attracted attention from filmmakers. Besides producing corporate branding and promoting videos, his original Lookup Tables have been sold in over 170 countries.
As his videos are recorded in the ProRes format, limited storage space was a common challenge that let to purchasing external hard drives. As the number of these hard drives increased, managing storage became increasingly complicated, and using footage for past projects required him to spend time searching through hard drives to find desired data. After an acident that involved losing data, he decided to migrate data to a NAS.
Considering capacity, ease of management, and system stability, he started using a 4-bay QNAP NAS. After several years of dependable performance, he upgraded to the TVS-h1288X high-end NAS model. The key focus of the installation was the ability for multiple users to simultaneously connect and edit media files, and the high IOPS required for 8K video production. The TVS-h1288X features the enterprise-class Intel® Xeon® W processor to meet AUXOUT’s high requirements.
For storage, eight 16TB hard drives and four 1TB SATA SSDs were installed. The large archive is stored on a large hard drive volume (112TB in theoretical value), and the SSD is used as a cache to improve IOPS performance, thus achieving both work and cost efficiency. The hard drive volume is configured with an eight-drive RAID 5, and has near-SSD speeds of 900 MB/s read and over 700 MB/s write.
The NAS is located in a walk-in closet next to the workroom and is connected to the Mac Studio via a 10GbE hub, or can be accessed from a MacBook or iPhone via Wi-Fi. Videos for YouTube are recorded directly to the NAS via a capture board, and the microphone does not pick up HDD operating noise.
AUXOUT, a DaVinci Resolve enthusiast, has built his database on a NAS. All he had to do was install QNAP's Container Station app, create a virtual server, and configure a few settings. In no time at all he had a collaboration environment with 1.5 times the storage capacity of Blackmagic's storage at only a fifth of the price.
Backup is of course important. He uses Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS 3) on the NAS to back up and sync files, and data is stored in multiple cloud environments for different purposes. The synchronization feature is very convenient for sharing data to and from remote members of the team. Snapshots are also used to protect files from data loss. He can revert data to a previously-recorded state when a file is inadvertently modified.
The excellent hardware and software brought greatly improved work efficiency. It is reassuring for him to know that AUXOUT’s workflow has become more robust, as even if the NAS should fail in the future, all he has to do is replace it with a new NAS at a budget price and migrate data in an easy way.
