Overview

Port forwarding is usually when users want to access applications that are installed on a network device installed behind a router from the internet. However, port forwarding inherently poses security risks by allowing users outside your network access to your device. QNAP recommends reviewing your current port forwarding rules and disable unused rules.

Answer

  1. Identify the public IP address of the router.
    Note
Use an IP identification tool such as What is My IP Address to check whether the IP address is public and verify if the device is behind the router.
  2. Open the TCP Port Scan tool and scan for open ports and services.
  3. Verify if there are any open ports and services on the device.
  4. Disable the following functions on the device and router if open ports and services are detected.
    • Port forwarding on the QNAP device and the router.
    • Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) on the router.
Note
Run the TCP Port Scan tool again to verify if there are any open ports and services.
