What can I do if HBS encounters throttling with OneDrive or OneDrive for Business?

Symptom
Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS) may encounter throttling when running a demanding backup or sync job where the destination is OneDrive or OneDrive for Business.
When HBS encounters throttling, one of the following symptoms will appear:
- You receive one of the following HTTP errors:
- 429 (Too Many Requests)
- 503 (Service Unavailable)
- The backup or sync job stops responding, or its status does not change for a long time.
Cause
HBS allows you to back up or sync NAS data to OneDrive and OneDrive for Business through the use of the Microsoft Graph platform and API. Microsoft Graph is designed to handle a high volume of requests. If a client sends an overwhelming number of requests, Microsoft Graph throttles the client to help maintain optimal service performance and reliability.
Throttling limits the number of client actions or concurrent calls to prevent overuse of resources. For example, if you run 10 jobs on HBS and each job needs to backup or sync 1 TB of content, this will likely result in throttling.
Throttling may also be triggered when multiple services that use the Microsoft Graph API are running at the same time (for example, when HybridMount, VJBOD Cloud, and HBS are all running on the same NAS).
Solutions
To avoid throttling, consider one or more of the following solutions:
- Run the job during off-peak business hours.
- Limit the scope of data transfers by splitting up large jobs into several smaller jobs.
- If you notice throttling is occurring, pause the job and wait until later before continuing the job.
