Immutable Storage

Safeguard data integrity and increase your protection against ransomware with QNAP’s immutable storage solution, whether in on-premises or cloud environments.

Why data immutability is important

Immutable storage safeguards data using techniques like Object Lock and WORM (Write Once, Read Many). These prevent any alterations or deletions to data for a specified or unlimited period of time. Choosing storage with immutability also adds an extra layer of defense between cybercriminals and your business data.

Understand how it is used for:

  • Ransomware protection

Immutable storage prevents any changes once data is written, effectively blocking ransomware from encrypting or deleting files and preserving data integrity.

  • Avoid human errors

Accidental deletions or modifications are avoided, as the stored data cannot be altered after being saved.

  • Regulatory compliance

Industries such as finance, healthcare, and legal sectors require long-term data retention without the risk of modification to comply with industry-standard regulations.

FAQ

Immutable storage is a data protection method that prevents data from being modified, deleted, or overwritten during a defined retention period—even by administrators. Unlike traditional backups, which focus on maintaining copies of data, immutable storage ensures data integrity by design, protecting recovery data from ransomware, credential compromise, and malicious deletion.

An immutable snapshot is a snapshot that cannot be altered or deleted once created, as long as it remains within its retention period. If ransomware encrypts live data or attempts to remove backups, the snapshot stays intact, allowing systems to be restored to a clean point in time without paying ransom or suffering extended downtime.

Ransomware attacks often target backups and snapshots first by abusing compromised administrative credentials. Immutable storage prevents this by making recovery data undeletable during its retention period, providing a reliable last line of defense when systems, accounts, or networks are compromised.

Immutable does not mean permanent; data protection is enforced through a defined retention policy. Data cannot be altered or deleted during that period, but can be removed once retention expires, supporting governance, compliance, and normal data lifecycle management.

Immutable storage is best suited for high-value or regulated data, such as backups, audit records, and compliance-related information. Data that changes frequently should remain mutable. A tiered approach balances protection and usability.

The 3-2-1-1-0 strategy extends the traditional 3-2-1 rule by requiring at least one immutable or offline backup copy. Immutable storage fulfills this requirement by ensuring a recovery copy cannot be altered or deleted, even if systems or administrative accounts are compromised.

Many regulations require data to remain tamper-proof for a defined period of time. Immutable storage supports these requirements by preserving data integrity during retention, helping organizations meet audit, compliance, and investigation needs.
