Why does QNAP recommend running surveillance services on QTS instead of QuTS hero?

Release date: 2023-07-28

Applicable Products

QuTS hero, QVR Pro, QVR Elite

Details

QuTS hero is based on the ZFS file system, which provides many benefits for use as a file server (including filesystem level data integrity checksum, instant snapshot, inline data de-duplication and compression, and high scalability).

Due to the nature of surveillance recordings, which involve continuous high-frequency write operations and are typically recorded in a compressed format, the instant snapshots may occupy additional storage space, and video files may not be effectively compressed or deduplicated using QuTS hero. Additionally, the self-healing feature may provide limited benefits for video files that are rarely affected by minor data errors. With these caveats, it's recommended to use QTS (which uses the ext4 file system) as it can handle high-frequency write operations better.

QuTS hero NAS can serve as a destination for backing up the recording files for archival storage, as it provides high scalability to match the growing storage requirements of surveillance footage. Using a QTS NAS for surveillance recordings and a QuTS hero NAS for archival storage provides a secure data management strategy that is specific to video files in effective rotating and archiving old recordings for policy requirements. In case the NAS is not dedicated for surveillance, you can use QVR Elite as an alternative option. It is recommended to disable deduplication/checksum, and snapshot features where surveillance recordings are saved.
