What to do if the NAS is Experiencing Random Reboot / Hanging / Shutdown?

Release date: 2020-10-15

Applied models:

  • All NAS Series

Applied Firmware:

  • All Firmware Versions

There may be many reasons that may cause the NAS to reboot / hang / shutdown randomly, one of the most common causes is system instability due to incompatible or faulty memory/drive. If you are experiencing this, please first ensure the hard drives used are listed in the compatibility list for your NAS (https://www.qnap.com/en/compatibility/), and it is using QNAP supplied memory, as using unsupported modules may degrade performance, cause errors, or prevent the operating system from starting, thus it is highly recommended to use QNAP supplied memory for optimal stability and performance. For NAS models with more than one memory slot, using QNAP memory modules with identical specifications is recommended, and ensure they are within the models maximum memory.

Also confirm the status of the memory by performing a memory test (https://wiki.qnap.com/wiki/Memory_Test), if the memory test failed, it would indicate the memory may be faulty and will need to be replaced.

If the issue still persists, please contact QNAP Support via Our Service Portal for assistance, link below:
