Leonardo3 modernizes digital assets storage center with QNAP TS-h1283XU-RP NAS to support its worldwide cultural activities

  • Background

Leonardo3 is an innovative research center in Milan dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci, and was set up to study, interpret and make cultural heritage accessible to the public. To carry out this mission, Leonardo3 employ cutting-edge methods and technologies developed in-house in its research and development laboratories. In addition to designing exhibitions in internationally-renowned museums, multimedia experiences, videos and and three-dimensional models are created within their Monte Napoleone headquarters while physical models are built in their Pero laboratory.

  • Challenge

By focusing its core business on the edutainment formula, which is largely based on 3D technology, Leonardo3 manages a huge amount of data every day including graphic reproduction of works, animations, video demos, and more. Leonardo3 has grown very quickly. At the technological level, this meant that they needed to store and protect a massive amount of precious data and to be able to access it online as quickly as possible whenever needed.

After installing several NAS of other companies, Leonardo3 discovered that over time those devices did not meet their needs. Leonardo3 came across QNAP by chance when searching online, and installed a QNAP NAS directly with extreme ease. In terms of performance, Leonardo3 immediately noticed improvements, so they decided to quickly implement additional QNAP NAS.

Solution

In a few days, a new ultra-modern system consisting of a headquarters-based TS-h1283XU-RP NAS and two other NAS based in their museum was installed. While the TS-h1283XU-RP NAS acts as the main center for their data and is always on, the other two NAS perform real-time backup for selected documents and scheduled backup for other files. A QSW-IM1200-8C 10 Gigabit Ethernet switch was installed in both sites to boost the system’s bandwidth potential.

Results

“Leonardo3 sets up exhibitions all over the world, and thanks to the QNAP system we have installed, we now can remotely access any files stored on the QNAP NAS at our laboratory extremely quickly. To date, we have never had any operational blockages on our business and this new installation is extremely beneficial for our approach to the market. It has projected us a very exciting future since we are able to have more data available and can count on redundancy, security, and fast data accessibility. Last but not the least, we are also very satisfied from a money value point of view” concluded Lisa Massimiliano, CEO and Co-founder of Leonardo3.

In terms of energy saving and system functionality optimization, the auto-detect function of the switches enables the main QNAP NAS to detect the network load in real time and transfer data proportional to the amount of available bandwidth to the backup NAS by guaranteeing maximum operability for Leonardo3.
