Why can't my media player load NAS content after I upgraded my firmware?

Root Cause

This issue may be caused by media players using SMB1.

SMB1 is an older and less secure protocol for file sharing. Due to security issues it is no longer the default version of SMB used by QNAP NAS from QTS 5.0.1 and QuTS hero 5.0.1.

You can check if this is the cause of the issue by checking logs in QuLog Center.

  1. Open QuLog Center.
  2. Go to Log Settings > Access Log Settings
  3. Tick SMB.
  4. Try using your media player again.
  5. Reopen QuLog Center and check the Access Log.
  6. If you receive a Deny SMB1 host (security limitation) error, then your media player is using SMB1..

Workaround

You should check if your media player supports SMB2 (or later) and switch to using that protocol. However if your media player does not support SMB2 (or later) then a workaround is to re-enable SMB1 on your NAS.

Warning

SMB1 was disabled on QTS for security concerns. Enabling it may negatively impact your system security.

SMB1 should only be enabled if you understand these risks and proceed at your own discretion.

  1. Open Control Panel.
  2. Go to Network & File Services > Win/Mac/NFS/WebDAV > Microsoft Networking > Advanced Options.
  3. Set the lowest SMB version to SMB1.
