Why do my iSCSI targets appear disconnected after an HA switchover?

Last modified date: 2025-07-01

Applicable Products

  • iSCSI & Fibre Channel
  • Windows Server 2012, 2016, and 2019

Symptom

After the system performs a high-availability (HA) switchover, iSCSI targets that were connected on the old active node now appear disconnected on the new active node.

Root Cause

During an HA switchover, iSCSI connections are temporarily disconnected so that the system can transfer services from the old active node to the new active node. When the switchover is complete, the iSCSI targets on the new active node will reconnect with their initiators. However, iSCSI & Fibre Channel may not update the status of each target until it receives a read/write request from an initiator, especially if the target was idle before the switchover. Hence, the targets may temporarily appear “disconnected”.

Solution

Please wait for the system to update the status of your iSCSI targets. After a successful HA switchover, although a brief delay in status update may occur, the targets should have already reconnected, and all iSCSI services should be functioning normally.
