I may be the only person in the country doing this preservation work at this scale, with no IT department and no room for downtime. QNAP gave me a genuine performance upgrade exactly when I needed it, on a platform that doesn't fight my unusual workflow.
- Mark O'Brien – Founder, Uncommon Ephemera
Background
Uncommon Ephemera is a media preservation organization based in the Binghamton, NY area and run single-handedly by Mark O'Brien. It is dedicated to preserving filmstrips, a format used widely in industrial and educational settings from the 1920s through the 1990s that has long been overlooked by mainstream archives, universities, and museums.
The organization focuses on researching and acquiring these largely forgotten film assets. Close to 5,000 titles have been catalogued, more than 1,300 have been digitized, and several hundred have been fully restored, with all of them released free of charge on the Internet Archive. The entire project is sustained by Patreon subscriptions and direct donations, and in September 2026 the work was featured by The New York Times, which described it as one of the very few organizations in the world dedicated to preserving this format and its history.
Challenges
Uncommon Ephemera is a one-person operation with no IT department, no budget for enterprise support contracts, and no room for system downtime. Before QNAP, the entire archive ran on a third-party NAS purchased in 2023 that had originally been intended for nothing more than basic file storage and backup.
As donation income slowed, cost savings meant folding public-facing services that had been running on rented VPS (virtual private server) instances, including the official website, a custom project-management database backend, and custom social media scheduling tools, back onto that single NAS. Stacking that many services onto a machine never designed for the load pushed its Ryzen V1500B processor into a serious bottleneck whenever multiple concurrent Docker workloads were running.
Solution
Looking for a more stable and more capable environment, Uncommon Ephemera turned to QNAP to rebuild its infrastructure:
- Deployment: A rackmount QNAP TS-855eU-8G was deployed with memory expanded to 16 GB (8 GB factory plus 8 GB added). Storage is configured with two M.2 NVMe SSDs for caching, a RAID 6 HDD array (roughly 29 TB usable) as the primary storage pool, and a separate RAID 1 pair (two 500 GB HDDs) dedicated to camera and surveillance recording workloads.
- Seamless migration and consolidation: The Intel® Atom® C5125 processor in the TS-855eU-8G delivers around twice the performance of the previous unit, resolving a long-standing pain point outright. Mark carried out the entire migration on his own, in stages, working evenings and weekends: starting with MariaDB, then moving the management backend, the social scheduler, and the public-facing website. Core production services were migrated within 10 to 12 days.
- Network topology: The TS-855eU-8G was installed in the existing network cabinet and connected to an enterprise switch over Gigabit Ethernet with SMB Multichannel. A direct 10GbE point-to-point link to an M2 Ultra Mac Studio workstation was also set up, so large video files and lossless scans can be worked on directly from the NAS.

Result
Once deployment and data migration were complete, the TS-855eU-8G brought an immediate change to daily operations at Uncommon Ephemera, with benefits across performance, operational flexibility, and long-term growth:
- Processing power that unlocks the full workflow: Roughly double the processor performance eliminated the compute bottleneck that emerged as the NAS shifted from a simple storage device into a full production host.
- A container-friendly platform that simplifies service management: QNAP's Container Station supports Docker Compose natively with no workarounds, so Uncommon Ephemera, which depends heavily on custom software such as a PHP backend and Python schedulers, could move its environment across untouched. This was the single biggest reason the migration succeeded.
- Lower running costs and room to expand: Consolidating every service onto dedicated hardware removed the recurring cost of rented VPS instances and greatly simplified operations overall. Ample CPU and RAM resources ensure the infrastructure can keep pace as the archive continues to grow (close to 4,000 filmstrips are still waiting to be restored), so IT is no longer an obstacle to the project but its most dependable foundation.
