Scenario
Users want to run virtual machines on their NAS but are unsure whether their NAS supports Virtualization Station.
Solution
Virtualization Station is based on the open-source KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) and is designed for QNAP NAS equipped with x86 architecture processors. It only runs on hardware that supports x86 virtualization extensions such as Intel® VT or AMD-V™.
System Requirements
- QNAP NAS with an x86 processor (Intel or AMD)
- At least 4GB RAM
- QTS 4.3.4 (or later), or QuTS hero h4.5.0 (or later)
NAS with ARM processors are not compatible with Virtualization Station because ARM and x86 differ fundamentally in instruction set, virtualization support, and CPU design.
While Virtualization Station does not support the ARM platform, QNAP offers an alternative solution for ARM-based NAS: Container Station. It supports LXD, Docker, Kata containers, and is compatible with both 64-bit x86 and ARM platforms.
