Why do the timestamps of my shared files sometimes change after accessing them with the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP)?

Last modified date: 2018-08-06

When accessing shared files on your NAS, timestamps such as Date Created, Date Modified, or Last Opened can sometimes change dramatically. This is a known issue that occurs when files are accessed with network protocols that use different date formatting.

Two common protocols that use different date formatting are the macOS Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) and WIndows’ Server Message Block (SMB). This can mean that the operating system used to access a file can affect the file’s timestamps. In an environment that uses multiple operating systems, this can often result in differences between how files are dated.

To preserve consistent timestamps for files, QNAP suggests minimizing the use of multiple protocols when accessing files.
