Why doesn't Hybrid Backup Sync follow the default gateway when running a backup or sync job?

Hybrid Backup Sync on all NAS series

Symptom

When I create a backup or sync job with Hybrid Backup Sync (HBS), the network traffic does not always follow the NAS default gateway. Instead, HBS automatically selects a network adapter, which may direct traffic through a different route.

Root Cause

If the Network Interface setting of the HBS job is set to Automatic, HBS selects the network port (interface) with the lowest traffic load to connect to the target. As a result, the backup or sync job traffic may not use the NAS’s default gateway.

Solution

To ensure HBS traffic follows the default gateway, configure the job to use manual network interface selection.

  1. Edit your HBS job.
  2. Go to the Rules > Network tab.
  3. Select Manual instead of Automatic.
  4. Choose the network interface that uses the default gateway (usually LAN1 unless customized on your device).
  5. Save your changes and run the job again.
