How to set up a VPN server on QNAP NAS behind the router?

Procedure
Follow these steps to set up a VPN server on a QNAP NAS behind a router.
- Install QVPN service in the App Center.
- Log in to QTS as an administrator.
- Open the App Center.
- Find and install the QVPN service app.
- Choose a suitable VPN service.Note
- Consult the table in How to choose suitable VPN services for you? for advice on the best VPN service for your use case.
- WireGuard® VPN is only available on QVPN Service 3.0 running QTS 5.0 on x86 NAS models.
- L2TP is recommended for ease-of-use and compatibility. WireGuard is recommended for speed and security.
- Set up a Qufirewall rule to allow VPN connections.NoteIt is recommended to change default VPN ports to enhance security.
- L2TP (500, 4500, 1701/UDP) - L2TP default ports cannot be modified
- OpenVPN (1194/UDP)
- WireGuard (51820/UDP)
- QBelt (443/UDP)
- Setup VPN client and establish a test VPN connection to the local network.

- Configure port forwarding on your NAT router.NoteConsult your router's user guide or contact your device manufacturer for more information on performing these steps.
- Log in to your NAT router.
- Find the settings for Port forwarding/Virtual server.
- Enter the NAS IP, port number, protocol in the setting (for example: 192.168.1.2, 51820, UDP for a default WireGuard VPN server).
- Apply the settings.
- Establish the VPN connection.
