This NAS is ideal for the home enthusiast looking for a NAS system that is designed to work on its own with out the assistance of a PC while performing certain functions on its own. We also feel that this product is more suited for users who have medium to high computer experience as you may get frustrated with the configuration side of this NAS. In the end QNAP has built a very solid NAS solution.

As usual with desktop NAS devices also the QNAP model offers more than just network storage. It's suitable as multimedia and especially as web server, so it does perform with PHP/MySQL web applications much better than the predecessor and the competition thanks to a clealy more powerful CPU and much more RAM. Also the storage performance profits from the better hardware. Improvements like the two independently configurable LAN ports, the seperately lockable drive bays and the LC display for setup without any PC help to establish a better business capability. For the use as single main server only redundant power supplies are missing.

The full-featured dual-disk server with RAID 0 & 1 support excellently suits a small office, and home - mostly thanks to the integrated torrent client, support for DLNA, iTunes Server and easy-to-use concept. Also consider a very good design, especialy the intellectual fan which I couldn't stop admiring at during the tests. I was afraid that I would have to turn off the server for night because of the noise. Of course, all this stuff doesn't make it a must buy for every family, but for those who know how to use at least a third of its features this is the only choice in this price range. You can try to assemble such system yourself but the result would hardly be so compact, easy in use and reliable.

QNAP TS-209 Pro file server we received for tests from EPA Systemy offered excellent and faultless performance, thus we could do and store important copies of documents or projects being worked on. It is sufficient to change a faulty disc, and RAID is automatically reconstructed. A possibility of data remote replication via LAN or WAN with other servers to protect our data is a very interesting feature offered by TS-209 Pro.

Nearly every home office needs most of the features this NAS delivers. The TS-409U functions as a file server, data depository, backup server, print server, download client, web server, multimedia server... and much more. There can be much debate as to which type of NAS to buy. Some prefer the Linux appliance route, while others prefer Microsoft's flexible Windows Home Server.

The real killer feature for us though is the RAID expansion and migration - being able to drop in more or larger drives and have it simply expand the same array without having to start again is not just a great feature, its invaluable. While the software side is wrapped up, hardware wise it could certainly be better kitted though as it needs some vibration dampening for the hard drives and a better processor for those XOR RAID calculations.

In spite of a very specific audience the server has some obvious advantages. First of all, its massive metallic case and absence of a fan make its work almost noiseless. Its passive cooling is sufficient even in the extreme conditions of this summer when the temperature goes over 30 degrees C. The box is quite hot after a nonstop operation during a week. But it doesn’t affect its performance. Another obvious advantage is that it’s able to save data on a spare hard drive. There are almost all necessary utilities typical for devices of this class –support for PC-less file downloading, FTP and UpNP servers, Squeeze. Also, it might be helpful to use this device as a surveillance server. The TS409-Pro is a great system. One of Qnap's smaller versions might be more appropriate for home usage because of price, but all in all the system is great. It does things that some servers can't do, and costs a fraction as much. We would like to thank Qnap again for letting us review this system.
