How do I expand the Storage Pool/Static Volume by replacing disks with higher-capacity drives in QTS 4.4.3 or later?

Scenario

This article explains how to expand the Storage Pool or Static Volume by replacing the disks on the NAS models listed above.

This process is only supported on the following RAID types: RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, RAID 10.

Important
  • Always check that hard drives and other devices are compatible with your NAS before purchase.
  • The final capacity of your NAS after replacing drives will be based on the smallest drive in the RAID.
  • Your data is still accessible while expanding the Storage Pool/Static Volume.

Procedure

  1. Log in to the NAS as an administrator.
  2. Open Storage & Snapshots.
  3. Go to Storage > Storage/Snapshots
  4. Double click a storage pool to open the "Storage Pool Management" page.
  5. Select a RAID group.
  6. Click Manage > Replace Disks One by One
  7. Select the drives to replace.
  8. Click Change.
  9. When the description changes to Please remove this drive, remove the drive from the NAS or expansion enclosure.
  10. Wait for the RAID rebuild to complete.
  11. When the description changes to You can replace this drive, insert the new drive.
  12. Once all drives are replaced and completed rebuilding, click Expand Capacity.

  13. A confirmation window opens. Click Yes to expand the selected RAID group.
