Background

Christiaan is an experienced video producer based in the Netherlands. His customers span across multiple sectors – Air Products (industrial gas company), Gerry Weber (fashion), VDL, the Province of Overijssel and various municipalities.

Challenge

As Arts eMotion business grew, they generated an incredible amount of video data. As their existing storage method relied on using multiple portable hard drives, which could only be accessed by one user at a time, Christiaan realized the studio required an organized and centralized storage solution that allowed simultaneous access for multiple Mac and Windows users. As portable hard drives also lack the speed to smoothly edit 4K files, Arts eMotion also prioritized a fast solution that would enable editing video files without first moving them to the workstation. Apart from fast editing, project archival was also a priority as files must be securely stored for many years to allow return customers to have their videos updated. Lastly, as a small and growing business, the solution must also be cost-efficient.

Solution

Through comparing multiple NAS brands, Arts eMotion eventually decided that the QNAP TVS-h1688X NAS was the best for them. The TVS-h1688X is a powerful 16-bay Intel® Xeon® NAS (four 2.5-inch and twelve 3.5-inch trays) with two 10GbE and four 2.5GbE network ports. Christiaan installed ten 14TB HDDs with RAID 6 configuration to achieve fast read and write speeds while factoring in capacity and data protection requirements. The speed provided is more than enough to enable simultaneous editing of videos straight on the NAS.

Result

The TVS-h1688X is a game changer for Arts eMotion. By being able to access the same data from Mac or Windows computers (at speeds of around 1000MB/s) they can work more efficiently with the time saved being used to improve overall project quality. The Share Link function enables sharing large files with customers without needing to directly attach or send the files. Data transfer services (such as WeTransfer) are not necessary anymore. Arts eMotion staff are very happy that the TVS-h1688X allows them to spend more time creating new work or relaxing.
