QNAP - High-performance Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS

3-in-1 Solution Introduction

QNAP Extraordinary

QNAP Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS

QNAP Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS is the world's first DAS/NAS/iSCSI SAN triple solution that wields the incredible power of Thunderbolt™ 2 to double the speed potential to 20Gb/s for enabling simultaneous 4K video transfer and display. It is also a perfect match for Thunderbolt™-equipped Mac & Windows users for 4K workflows, file storage and backup.

Mac operating system OS X El Capitan 10.11 or later is required.

Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS Thunderbolt™

Next-generation Thunderbolt™ technology

Thunderbolt™ technology provides PCI Express with blazing-fast 10Gb/s transfer speeds. Thunderbolt™ 2 doubles the bandwidth to deliver bi-directional 20Gb/s speed, which provides the bandwidth needed for simultaneous 4K video file transfer and display. The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS features Thunderbolt™ 2 for high-speed and flexible connectivity. You can move data to/from a peripheral up to 4 times faster than with USB 3.

Dual network: Thunderbolt™ 2 & 10GbE

The Thunderbolt™ 2 protocol uses industry standard networking technologies meaning the high-speed transmission over your Thunderbolt™ 2 cable is able to run all network services (such as file sharing, FTP, and other services). The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS can also simultaneously run general Ethernet services with the built-in 10GbE LAN card in addition to the Thunderbolt™ 2 network, completely independently and with no bandwidth interference. You can flexibly allocate proper bandwidth for different concurrent tasks.

Pioneering DAS/NAS/iSCSI-SAN triple solution

The unmatched Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS combines direct attached storage (DAS), network attached storage (NAS) and iSCSI-SAN into one box. It prevents the restriction of DAS connecting to only one device, and breaks the cost barrier for constructing 10GbE high-speed network environments. The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS not only allows cross-platform file sharing via network as NAS but also provides convenient hot-pluggable connection as DAS. Moreover, it enables iSCSI-SAN transferring up to 20Gb/s thanks to the Thunderbolt™ interface. The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS dramatically redefines the private cloud, combining the best of DAS and NAS.

Hot-pluggable like DAS
Cross-platform file sharing as NAS
Higher performance iSCSI SAN
  • Hot-pluggable like DAS. The Thunderbolt™-ready Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS is hot-pluggable and easy to move between connected devices, delivering plug-and-use convenience.
  • Cross-platform file sharing as NAS. The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS shares both AFP and SMB. You can choose the Thunderbolt™ IP or Ethernet IP for file sharing to multiple devices over the network.
  • Higher performance iSCSI SAN. You can deploy iSCSI SAN with the Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS enhanced by Thunderbolt™ performance for block-level storage.

Designed for 4K media applications

The common bottleneck for 4K workflows: I/O and storage.

I/O speed

4K video file editing, transfer and display require high bandwidth.

A single uncompressed 4K (4096x2160) stream at 24 fps requires a full 10Gb/s Ethernet link. Using 4K Full (4096x3112) resolution at higher frame rates requires more.

File Storage

Massive 4K files eat up hard drive space very quickly!

One hour of 4K content can require hundreds of gigabytes to terabytes of storage (depending on the video format).

QNAP Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS directly tackles bottleneck affecting 4K content workflows:

With Thunderbolt™ 2 providing 20Gb/s throughput, the Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS is capable of transferring 4K video smoothly and handling relative workloads with ease. Its large storage capacity allows to accommodate up to 64TB (with 8TB hard drive) files, or even more by scaling up with Thunderbolt™ storage expansion enclosures, providing the ideal storage solution ready for high-resolution raw files.

Improve 4K workflows with Thunderbolt™ NAS

As 4K video rapidly approaches mainstream audiences, you can discover how wonderful the Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS is for supporting 4K workflows, especially for video editors, filmmakers, studios and post-production houses.

  • Increased Productivity

Up to 2 Thunderbolt™ devices can connect to the Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS to simultaneously process real-time video editing.

  • Multi-track Video Editing

The Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS delivers powerful and stable throughput for real-time non-linear video editing, and also allows multi-track video editing with the lowest latency.

  • Direct 4K HDMI Display

A 4K monitor can connect to the Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS via HDMI to directly play 4K videos.

  • Management with Video Station

The Video Station is a useful video management system for archiving, organizing and sharing video collections.

Common video editing programs include

  • Final Cut Pro X »

Final Cut Pro X is the mainstream video editing app for Mac. With Qfinder for Mac, editors can easily import videos on the connected Thunderbolt™ 2 NAS to Mac workstations and process real-time 4K media editing.
