Why is my Mac unable to recognize a disk volume that was formatted to the exFAT file system using Windows?

Last modified date: 2020-11-17

The exFAT file system can be formatted with different cluster sizes. Windows and Mac OS support different sets of cluster sizes for exFAT, so your disk volume was likely formatted with a cluster size supported by Windows but not by Mac OS.

If you want to format your disk volume to exFAT and have it recognized by both Windows and Mac OS, select a cluster size supported by both operating systems (such as 128K or 1M) when formatting the disk volume.
