Problem

In Windows File Explorer, I opened a NAS shared folder's Previous Versions (by right-clicking the folder and going to Properties > Previous Versions), but I could not see any of the snapshots that should be there.

Solution

To see snapshots in a NAS shared folder in Previous Versions in Windows File Explorer—and therefore be able to restore files from the snapshots—ensure that all of the following settings are enabled on the NAS:

  1. Log in to your NAS operating system.
  2. Enable the "@Recently-Snapshot" folder for all shared folders.
    1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Global Settings > Snapshots > Snapshot Access in File Station.
    2. Enable Snapshot folder in each shared folder.
    3. Click Apply.
  3. Enable Windows Previous Versions on the shared folder.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Privilege > Shared Folders > Shared Folder.
    2. Identify the shared folder for which you want to enable Windows Previous Versions.
    3. Under Action, click the Edit Properties icon.
      The Edit Properties window opens.
    4. Select Enable Windows Previous Versions.
    5. Click OK.
  4. Allow symbolic links within shared folders and between different shared folders.
    1. Go to Control Panel > Network & File Services > Win/Mac/NFS/WebDAV > Microsoft Networking.
    2. Click Advanced Options.
      The Advanced Options window opens.
    3. Select Allow symbolic links within a shared folder.
    4. Select Allow symbolic links between different shared folders.
    5. Click Apply.
