Why can’t QFinder Pro detect my managed QSW switch?
Applicable Products
- QSW-M1208-8C
- QSW-M1204-4C
- QSW-M804-4C
- Other QNAP QSW-M series managed switches running QSS
Symptom
After powering on the switch, QFinder Pro cannot detect the switch on the same local network.
Analysis
- By default, QNAP switches obtain an IP address via DHCP. If no DHCP server exists or the network has issues, the switch may not appear in QFinder Pro.
- A green and blinking status LED indicates the switch is booting. Booting should normally complete within 5 to 10 minutes. If the LED continues blinking, it may indicate a boot issue.
- If your computer was previously set to a static IP address to configure the switch, you may need to revert to automatic IP allocation to communicate on the same network.
Solution
- Check network connections:
- Ensure that the switch and your computer running QFinder Pro are connected to the same LAN.
- Verify all cables are securely plugged in and the network port LEDs are active.
- Verify your computer’s network settings:
- If you previously assigned your computer a static IP to access the switch, restore your original network settings. This ensures your computer is on the same subnet as the switch.
- Check DHCP server availability:
- QNAP switches use DHCP by default to get an IP address. Make sure a DHCP server is active on your network.
- If no DHCP server is available, the switch may not be assigned an IP address and can't be found by QFinder Pro.
- Try accessing the switch using a web browser:
- If you know the switch’s IP address, enter it in your web browser to access the management interface.
- If you do not know the IP address, check your DHCP server or router’s client/device list for a device labeled as QNAP switch.
- Restart the switch and your computer:
- Power cycle both the switch and your computer to refresh network connections.
- Reset the switch to factory defaults (if necessary):
- Warning: Resetting the switch erases all custom settings and restores factory defaults.
- To reset, press and hold the physical reset button for 10 seconds.
- After resetting, use QFinder Pro again to locate the switch and perform reconfiguration as needed.
If the status LED remains green and blinking for more than 10 minutes and the switch is still undetectable, you can use the console port to investigate further. For guidance, refer to How to use the console port to check system information on a managed switch. If needed, collect booting information and contact QNAP support for further assistance.
