Why does a new M.2 SSD show a warning status in QNAP NAS?
Applicable Products
All QNAP NAS
Symptom
Some M.2 SSDs support a security feature called Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) with AES 256-bit encryption. These SSDs can enter a “blocked” state from the factory, even if they are brand new and have never been used.
When in this blocked state, the NAS cannot read the full drive attributes correctly and may interpret the drive as abnormal or show a warning, even though the SSD is not physically damaged.
This is a design of the SSD manufacturer, not an issue with QNAP NAS.
Solution
Perform an SED Secure Erase on the SSD to clear the blocked status:
1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks.
2. Select a SED disk.
3. Click Action, and then select SED Erase.
4. The SED Erase window opens.
5. Enter the disk's Physical Security ID (PSID).
6.Click Apply.
