myQNAPcloud Link
Scenario
Your mobile device connects to your NAS via myQNAPcloud Link, but your NAS does not enable Secure Login (SSL). You wonder whether your connection is secure.
Explanation
Is my data always encrypted with myQNAPcloud Link? What does Secure Login (SSL) do?
When your mobile phone connects via myQNAPcloud Link, your data (such as documents, photos, or videos) is always transmitted through a secure HTTPS (TLS-encrypted) tunnel, whether Secure Login (SSL) is enabled on your NAS or not. This ensures secure connection for your data transmission.
The Secure Login (SSL) option only matters when you have a direct connection (such as a connection via a LAN IP address, WAN IP address, or a DDNS hostname). When this option is enabled, your mobile device connects to your NAS using a secure port (default port number is 443), ensuring HTTPS encryption for this direct connection. You can configure this port setting on the NAS.
Note that this setting has no impact on myQNAPcloud Link, which always uses HTTPS by default.
How do my mobile apps choose a connection method?
Mobile apps automatically select the fastest available connection for optimal performance. This means they choose the faster method between myQNAPcloud Link and a direction connection. Note that the speed of each connection method depends on your configuration and network environment.
If your mobile apps use myQNAPcloud Link, then it will always establish a secure HTTPS connection.
How can I enhance connection security?
It is possible that your mobile apps choose a direct connection that is less secure than myQNAPcloud Link.
To enhance security, we recommend installing a valid SSL certificate on your NAS. This provides the following benefits:
- Verified NAS identity for trusted connections
- End-to-end HTTPS encryption
- No more untrusted certificate warnings
You can purchase an SSL certificate in the QNAP Software Store.
We recommend the following best practice to protect your data:
- Enable Secure Login (SSL) for direct connections (such as WAN IP address or DDNS hostname)
- Use myQNAPcloud Link for hassle-free, always-encrypted access
- Avoid insecure HTTP connections
