Background

SONOVERO R&D is a small Polish enterprise actively participating in the project “Development of modular quantum computer infrastructure for special and military IT applications.” The company specializes in proprietary solutions for quantum computing, with a strong focus on noise reduction, FPGA management, and related technologies.

As an active partner of leading Polish institutions—including Warsaw University of Technology, Military University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology, and others—SONOVERO R&D contributes to advancing Poland’s quantum computing ecosystem. To extend access to this research, the team identified the need to build quantum hardware simulators that would allow scientists, researchers, and students without direct access to physical quantum units to experiment, test, and learn.

Challenges

Developing such a simulation environment required an IT infrastructure that could deliver resilient storage, efficient performance, and secure protection of sensitive data. Large volumes of research data had to be stored and accessed quickly, while minimizing latency and bottlenecks. At the same time, the organization needed mechanisms to ensure continuity and prevent data loss, as well as the ability to support both Linux- and Windows-based environments for different research applications.

Solution

SONOVERO R&D’s IT environment is built on the XCP-ng hypervisor, with Xen Orchestra managing multiple backup strategies—including full, differential, and incremental scenarios—depending on service criticality. To power this virtualization environment with reliable storage, the organization deployed two QNAP NAS systems as its backbone – the short-depth rackmount NAS TS-864eU and TS-855eU.

Each NAS is configured with RAID 6 to provide fault tolerance and enhanced data reliability. The two devices are directly connected with a 10GbE 1:1 link for fast synchronization, while also being integrated into the organization’s CORE switches via 10GbE interfaces to deliver high throughput across the research infrastructure.

  • Snapshots and replication: QNAP’s snapshot technology and replication between the two NAS units provide robust protection against failures and user errors, ensuring rapid recovery and business continuity.
  • Unified access protocols: By leveraging NFS and CIFS protocols, the team enables efficient shared storage across Linux environments while ensuring seamless integration with Windows applications.

This setup created a storage environment designed for high-accessibility, scalability, and data security to meet the specific needs of quantum research projects.

With QNAP NAS at the heart of its virtualization environment, SONOVERO R&D has built a storage foundation that is fast, reliable, and secure. The solution not only protects valuable research with RAID 6, snapshots, and replication, but also ensures seamless performance with 10GbE connectivity—removing bottlenecks and giving the team confidence that their data is always protected and accessible.
