Adding drives from one NAS to another NAS that have drives installed already

Last modified date: 2022-03-30

Applied Models:

  • All HAL type models

Applied Firmware:

  • 4.4.1 and above

If you have multiple NAS devices installed, and want to add drives from one NAS to another NAS that already have drives installed, the following can be performed to migrate the drives and its data.

  1. First ensure the 2 NAS models are compatible for drive migration from the link below:

https://www.qnap.com/en/nas-migration/

  1. Power down the source NAS and remove the drives.

  1. While the destination NAS is still on, hot plug in the drives from the source NAS to the destination NAS one by one, the NAS should beep as the drives are being plugged in.

  1. Once all drives are detected by the NAS, go to the NAS web GUI and navigate to Storage & Snapshots > Disks/VJBOD > click “Recover” then “Attach and Recover Storage Pool”.

The system would scan the free drives installed in the NAS and recover the Storage Pool available on the drives.
