Disable unnecessary port forwarding

Last modified date: 2022-12-21

Summary

The network devices nowadays are usually installed behind a router where the outgoing and incoming network traffic goes through. If the applications of network devices need to be accessed from the internet, port forwarding settings on the router are widely used. However, port forwarding may bring security concerns. For enhancing the network security, we suggest reviewing your current port forwarding settings on the router and disable the unnecessary port forwarding by the following steps.

Find out which ports on the router are opened to the internet.

  1. First, you need to know the Public IP address of the router. Recommend checking https://whatismyipaddress.com/ to know the Public IP when the PC are behind the router.

  2. Second, use the Online port check tool to detect the open ports over the internet with the Public IP which you found in the first step. as the following example, these ports are detected as being opened on the router : 21,22,80,443,514,873,8080,8081,49152

Based on the scan result, review port forwarding setting.

  1. We strongly recommend disabling the function of port forwarding

  2. Disabling UPNP on the router. Here are some reference links you can find where to disable UPNP in the different brands of routers.

  3. Edit the necessary port forwarding settings in the Router Configuration page.

Run the Online port check tool again to make sure there are no unknown ports opened.
