Qfinder Pro

Qfinder Pro is a desktop utility that allows you to quickly search and manage your QNAP devices under the same network. To install Qfinder Pro, go to https://www.qnap.com/go/utilities/essentials, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Important:

The computer and the QNAP device must be connected to the same network.

After opening Qfinder Pro, the utility automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices under the same network. Qfinder Pro supports Windows, macOS, Linux, and Chrome OS.

Configuring Qfinder Pro Settings

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Go to Qfinder Pro > Preference.

    The Preference window opens.

  3. Under Preference, select or deselect one or more of the following settings.
    • Start Qfinder Pro on system startup

    • Automatically check for updates

    • Share anonymous usage information with QNAP

  4. Under Region, select your region.
  5. Under Run, select one of the following options for each setting.

    Option

    Description

    Open by web browser

    Opens the login screen in a new browser.

    Open by file explorer

    Opens the network drives.

  6. Under System Settings Reminder, select one of the following options for each setting.

    Option

    Description

    Always ask me

    Always asks if you want to configure the unconfigured device or set up an SMTP service.

    Only when I launch Qfinder Pro

    Only asks if you want to configure the unconfigured device or set up an SMTP service when you launch Qfinder Pro.

    Don't show this message again

    Never reminds you about unconfigured devices or setting up an SMTP service.

  7. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro saves the settings.

Available Qfinder Pro Features for Devices

The available Qfinder Pro features vary depending on your device.

The following table describes the different sections of the Qfinder Pro screen.

Device Actions

You can use Qfinder Pro to perform device actions remotely. To see which actions you can perform on the main screen, see Qfinder Pro Quick Actions.

Qfinder Pro Quick Actions

The following table describes actions you can perform on Qfinder Pro that are related to the device.

Important:

To start performing the actions from the following table, always click the device you want.

To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

Opens a login page in a new browser of the selected device.

Tip:

You can log in to a device that is on another subnet. While these devices do not show up on Qfinder Pro, you can connect your computer to the same subnet as the device and bookmark the device.

Click Login.

A login page opens in a new browser.

Allows you to see the Network Drives of the selected device.

  1. Click Network Drives.

    The Network Drives window opens.

  2. Select an IP address and protocol.

  3. Click OK.

    The shared folders appear in the file manager.

Allows you to upload files and folders to the selected device.

For details, see Uploading Files and Folders to the Device.

Allows you to configure the settings of the selected device.

  1. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  2. Enter the login credentials of the device.

  3. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

Tip:

For details on how to configure specific settings, go to Device Settings and Firmware.

Allows you to see the system status of the device.

  1. Click Details.

    A Login window opens.

  2. Enter the login credentials of the device.

  3. Click OK.

    The Device Details window opens.

Allows you to see the system health, CPU and RAM, network, and storage information on the selected device.

  1. Click Resource Monitor.

    A Login window opens.

  2. Enter the login credentials of the device.

  3. Click OK.

    The Resource Monitor window opens.

Locates the selected device.

  1. Click Locate This Device.

    A Login window opens.

  2. Enter the login credentials of the device.

  3. Click OK.

    The Locate This Device window opens.

  4. Under Signal, select one of the following options to locate the device.

    • Blinking disk LED

    • Beep alarm

  5. Select a duration.

  6. Click Start.

Allows a device to appear at the top of the list.

Tip:

If you bookmark a device on a subnet and switch to another subnet, that device will still appear at the top of the list.

Click Bookmark.

Wakes the device using Wake-on-LAN.

Click the icon.

The following table describes actions related to Qfinder Pro. To start performing these actions, click the icon.

Uploading Files and Folders to the Device

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to upload to.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Media Upload.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Media Upload window opens.

  6. Click .
  7. Select one of the following options.

    Option

    Upload a file

    1. Click .

      The Open window opens.

    2. Select a file.

    3. Click Open.

      Qfinder Pro prepares the file for upload.

    Upload a folder

    1. Click .

      The Select Folder window opens.

    2. Select a folder.

    3. Click Select Folder.

      Qfinder Pro prepares the folder for upload.

  8. Optional: Under Destination, change the destination folder.
    1. Click Change.

      The Change Destination window opens.

    2. Select a destination folder.
      Tip:

      You can create a new destination folder. Under Create a new folder, specify a folder name and then click Create.

    3. Click OK.
  9. Optional: Select one or more options.
    • Skip hidden files

    • Create photo thumbnails

  10. Under Set up policy to handle name conflicts during upload, select one of the following options for handling duplicate file names.
    • Skip

    • Overwrite

    • Rename

  11. Click Start Upload.

    Qfinder Pro uploads the items to the device.

Activating a License Online

You can activate a license online or offline. For details on activating a license offline, see Activating a License Offline in the QTS User Guide.

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to activate a license on.
  3. Go to Settings > License Activation.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The License Activation window opens.

  6. Under Activate with QNAP ID, click Select License.

    The Login to myQNAPcloud window appears.

  7. Enter the QNAP ID login credentials.
  8. Click Sign in.

    The License Activation window opens.

  9. Select a license to activate.
    Tip:

    To filter licenses by product, you can click the text box and select a product.

  10. Click Activate.

    Qfinder Pro activates the license, and a confirmation window appears.

  11. Click Close.

Connecting to a Device Using an SSH Connection

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to connect to from the list.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Go to Settings > Connect via SSH.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Connect via SSH window opens.

  6. Select Allow SSH connections.
  7. Click Apply.

    Qfinder Pro connects to the NAS using SSH.

Using Wake-on-LAN to Enable the Device

Important:

This task requires that the device you want to enable supports Wake-on-LAN.

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to enable.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Go to Tools > Remote Wake Up (Wake On LAN).

    The Remote Wake Up window opens.

    Tip:

    You can deselect the device or select another device on the list.

  4. Click Wake Up.

    A confirmaton message appears.

  5. Click OK.

Restarting or Shutting Down the Device

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to restart or shut down from the list.
  3. Click Tools.

    A drop-down menu appears.

  4. Select Restart Device or Shut down Device.

    A Login window opens.

  5. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  6. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro restarts or shuts down the device.

Device Settings and Firmware

You can use Qfinder Pro to configure the device settings and update its firmware actions remotely.

Updating the Device Firmware

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to update the firmware.
  3. Go to Tools > Update Firmware.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Update Firmware window opens.

    Note:

    If your device has the latest firmware installed, a confirmation message pops up.

  6. Select one of the following options.

    Option

    Automatically update the firmware to the latest version

    Note:

    You cannot select this option if the device is already updated to the latest firmware.

    Select Automatically update the firmware to the latest version.

    Path of the system firmware image file

    Tip:

    You can download the firmware from https://www.qnap.com/go/download.

    1. Select Path of the system firmware image file.

    2. Click Browse.

      The Select Firmware File window opens.

    3. Select the firmware image file.

    4. Click Open.

      The firmware image appears in the text box.

  7. Optional: Select Update all the devices with the same model number within the network.
  8. Click Start.

    Qfinder Pro updates the device firmware.

Configuring the Device Name

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to change the name.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

  6. Beside Device Name, enter a different name for the device.
  7. Click Apply.
  8. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro changes the device name.

Configuring the Administrator Password

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to change the administrator password.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

  6. Click Password.
  7. Enter the following information.
    • Current Password

    • New Password

    • Verify New Password

  8. Click Apply.
  9. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro changes the administrator password.

Configuring the Device Date and Time

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to configure.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

  6. Click Date/Time.
  7. Optional: Change the time zone.
    1. Beside Time Zone, click the text box.

      A drop-down menu appears.

    2. Select a time zone.
  8. Optional: Change the device's time and date.
    1. Select Change the device's time and date as below.
    2. Select one of the following options.

      Option

      Manual setting

      1. Select Manual setting.

      2. Configure the date and time.

        Tip:

        To change the date and time, highlight the number you want to change and use the arrows.

      Synchronize with an Internet time server automatically

      1. Select Synchronize with an Internet time server automatically.

      2. Enter a time server.

      Set the device time the same as your computer time

      Select Set the device time the same as your computer time.

  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro changes the device's date and time.

Configuring the Language for File Encoding

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to configure the file name encoding setting.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

  6. Click Codepage.
  7. Beside Filename Encoding, click the text box.

    A drop-down menu appears.

  8. Select one of the following options.
    • English

    • Simplified Chinese

    • Traditional Chinese

    • Cyrillic

    • Greek

    • Icelandic

    • Japanese

    • Korean

    • Slavic / Latin 2

    • Western Europe / Latin 1

  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro changes the file name encoding setting.

Configuring the Network Settings

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to configure the network settings.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Configuration.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Configuration window opens.

  6. Click Network Settings.
  7. Optional: Select an ethernet server.
  8. Select at least one of the following options.
    Tip:

    Depending on the selected option, you may need to enter a primary or secondary DNS server address.

    Option

    Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP

    Select Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP.

    Use static IP address

    Tip:

    If you select this option, you must enter a secondary DNS server address.

    1. Select Use static IP address.

    2. Enter a fixed IP address and default gateway.

    3. Select a subnet mask.

    Obtain DNS server address automatically

    Tip:

    You can only select this option if you selected Obtain IP address settings automatically via DHCP.

    1. Select Obtain DNS server address automatically.

    2. Enter a primary DNS server address.

    Use the following DNS server address

    Tip:

    This option is automatically selected if you select Use static IP address.

    1. Select Use the following DNS server address.

    2. Enter a secondary DNS server address.

  9. Click Apply.
  10. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro changes the network settings.

Network Drives and iSCSI drives

You can mount a shared folder as a network drive using Qfinder Pro.

Creating and Mounting a Network Drive

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the NAS you want to create and mount a network drive.
  3. Go to Connect > Storage Plug & Connect.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Storage Plug & Connect window opens.

    Tip:

    To configure the Storage Plug & Connect settings, go to Qfinder Pro > Preference > Storage Plug & Connect.

  6. Click Create a Network Drive.

    The Create Network Drive window opens.

  7. Enter a drive name.
    Tip:

    The drive name will be the same name as the shared folder. You cannot change the name of the shard folder.

  8. Select a location.
  9. Click OK.

    The Map a network drive window appears.

  10. Optional: Select Choose the drive automatically.
  11. Select a drive.
  12. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro mounts the network drive.

    Tip:
    • To unmap the network drive, click Unmap the Network Drive and then click OK.

    • To map a shared folder as a network drive, select a shared folder and then click Map the Network Drive.

Mounting a Network Drive on a MAC

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to connect to from the list.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Click Network Drives.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Network Drives window opens.

  6. Select an IP address and a protocol.
  7. Optional: Select Add mounted folders to "Favorites" in Finder.
  8. Click OK.

    The Check for Updates confirmation message appears.

    Note:

    This confirmation message only appears the first time you access Network Drives.

  9. Click Yes.

    A Login window opens.

    Note:

    This step only appears the first time you access Network Drives.

  10. Enter your Mac username and password, and then click OK.

    A confirmation message appears.

    Note:

    This step only appears the first time you access Network Drives.

  11. Click Connect.
  12. Select the shared folder.
  13. Click OK.

    The shared folder is mapped as a network drive. You can access this network drive using Qfinder Pro.

Creating and Mounting an iSCSI Drive

  1. Open Qfinder Pro.

    Qfinder Pro automatically searches and displays all QNAP devices on the same network.

    Tip:

    If you cannot find the device you want, make sure that it is on the same network as your computer.

  2. Click the device you want to connect to from the list.
    Important:

    To ensure the device on the list is yours, check the MAC address.

  3. Go to Connect > Storage Plug & Connect.

    A Login window opens.

  4. Enter the login credentials of the device.
  5. Click OK.

    The Storage Plug & Connect window opens.

  6. Click Create a Virtual Disk (iSCSI).

    The Create Virtual Disk window opens.

  7. Enter a disk name and capacity.
  8. Select a LUN type.

    LUN Type

    Description

    Block-based

    A block-based LUN directly allocates space at the block level. It increases efficiency and provides native support for virtualization applications.

    File-based

    A file-based LUN creates image files in the file system and then shares the space to other devices. Its efficiency is limited.

  9. Select the following information.
    • Location

    • Map to Target

    • File System

  10. Optional: Select Use CHAP authentication, and then enter the login credentials for the iSCSI.
  11. Click OK.

    Qfinder Pro creates an iSCSI disk.
