What are a disk’s “Maximum Speed” and “Current Speed” in QTS and External RAID Manager?

Last modified date: 2019-03-27

“Maximum Speed” is the maximum transfer speed that the disk’s drive bay or M.2/PCIe slot  supports. Any disk installed in this drive bay or M.2/PCIe slot  can theoretically transfer data to and from the host at this speed. The maximum speed may vary between drive bays and M.2/PCIe slots within the same NAS, and between different NAS models and expansion units.
If QTS or QNAP External RAID Manager is unable to display this information, you can check the maximum speed of a drive bay or M.2/PCIe slot in the device’s hardware specifications.

“Current Speed” is the speed at which the disk is currently connected to the host. This value is determined by the maximum speed that the disk supports, and the maximum speed of the drive bay or M.2/PCIe slot that the disk is installed in.

The current speed of a disk may be lower than the maximum speed stated in the disk’s specifications for one of the following reasons:

  • A hardware or software error has caused the disk to connect at a lower speed.
  • The maximum speed of the disk’s drive bay or M.2/PCIe slot is lower than the disk’s maximum speed.
