Why can’t I use Time Machine to back up to my QNAP NAS after updating to macOS 26 (Tahoe)?

After updating to macOS 26 (Tahoe), you may find that Time Machine backups to your QNAP NAS fail to complete. This usually happens when your Mac computer name, backup file name, or shared folder path contains special or non-ASCII characters, such as accented letters (ä, ø, é) or non-Latin characters (Chinese, Japanese, Korean).


Workaround

  • Rename your Mac’s computer name to use only alphanumeric characters (A–Z, 0–9).
    Steps:
    1. Go to System Settings > General > About.
    2. Edit the Name field to remove any special or non-ASCII characters.
  • Rename the Time Machine backup folder or shared folder on your QNAP NAS to remove special or non-ASCII characters. Preferred characters are A–Z, a–z, 0–9, hyphens (-), or underscores (_).
  • If there are many files or folder names that use non-ASCII characters, consider pausing Time Machine backups until Apple releases a patch to address this issue.
