ESG QNAP Sustainability Initiatives
Social sustainability
QNAP has launched ‘QNAP Sustainability Initiatives’. We have been fulfilling our social responsibility for several years to care for vulnerable groups, and we have consistently engaged in various charitable activities to show love and warmth to those in need, and to make a positive impact. As a corporate citizen, QNAP has increasingly embraced environmental protection in recent years. In addition to continuously improving the company‘s products and processes to reduce environmental impact, we advocate for environmental consciousness and promote green initiatives. We encourage employees to take eco-friendly actions daily to fulfill their environmental responsibilities.
Green Sustainability Initiatives
QNAP has always been attentive to environmental issues and has undertaken various green initiatives to support environmental sustainability.

Go Paperless Initiative
According to the calculation formula provided by the Environmental Quality Protection Foundation: 1 sheet of A4 paper weighs approximately 4 to 6 grams. Each box of A4 paper weighs about 25 kilograms (5,000 sheets). To produce one ton of pulp, approximately 24 trees with an average height of 12 meters and a diameter of 15 to 20 centimeters need to be felled. Each ton of pulp can produce 40 boxes of paper. Therefore, the production of 1 box of A4 paper requires the felling of approximately 24/40 = 0.6 trees! QNAP is fully aware that continuing in this manner would lead to environmental depletion, so it has taken the following Go Paperless Initiative since 2014:
- Since 2014, payroll has gone paperless.
- Starting from 2018, Edenred electronic gift certificates have been used instead of paper gift certificates. In the office building, washrooms are equipped with hand dryers, with no paper towels.
- Since 2019, we have implemented digitization in our systems, using electronic signatures to reduce paper usage.

Recycling Nespresso Coffee Capsule
Used coffee capsules and coffee grounds are collected and returned to designated recycling bins. Aluminum shells from recycled capsules can be used to make Nespresso capsule packaging. Recycled coffee grounds can be sent to collaborating organic farms to become organic fertilizer for a healthy soil ecosystem. Nespresso is currently collaborating with Taoyuan Organic Farm and the Department of Horticulture and Landscape Architecture at National Taiwan University to conduct industry-academia collaborative research to create local sustainable value through the recycling of coffee grounds.

First Year of QNAP ESG
2023 is the first year of QNAP ESG. We have launched a series of new environmental actions under ’QNAP ESG Sustainability Initiatives‘. Through green initiatives and periodic environmental lectures or information-sharing events, we strive to increase employee’s daily awareness on sustainability, and we are committed to continuous improvements in our facilities and offices to further enhance environmental sustainability.
In 2020, office building washrooms were upgraded to use touch-controlled faucets to save water.

2023 Q1 Green Initiative
- The Xizhi headquarters started to promote a waste reduction initiative, starting with the return of individual trash bins. We also initiated the sorting of waste and kitchen leftovers while advocating correct recycling concepts and procedures.
- Promoting energy-saving and carbon reduction: Turning off computers and screens after work, scheduling power on and off for NAS devices, and other related initiatives.
- The company now uses environmentally-friendly recycled paper for photocopying.
-
2023 Q2 Green Initiative
- The entire company, including external locations, has fully implemented waste reduction measures, including returning personal trash bins. Single-use utensils have been completely discontinued, and environmentally friendly communal chopsticks are provided.
- Ninety-nine (99) green actions in response to the Million Green Actions initiative promoted by the Taiwan Earth Day Association.
- We have installed a sparkling water dispenser and added jam to the sparkling water for flavor enhancement. Colleagues are encouraged to bring their own cups to help reduce the use of plastic from beverage purchases, thus minimizing waste and energy consumption associated with transportation.
- Environmental awareness sharing: Held the ‘Seas Are Good, But Better Without Plastics’ eco-friendly and anti-plastic lecture on 05/31, with 47 participants.
- Environmental awareness sharing: Shared the RE-THINK Ocean Waste Guide webpage to help colleagues understand the types and sources of marine debris. Through small games, we enhanced our knowledge of marine waste. Everyone can also share this information with family and friends, and allow kids to learn about marine debris together.
- Environmental awareness sharing: Shared the 6th edition of the Taiwan Seafood Guide from the Taiwan Ocean Conservation and Fisheries Sustainability Foundation. Due to overfishing, habitat destruction, environmental pollution, and climate change, global marine resources and biodiversity are rapidly declining. Through this guide, we provide everyone with a reference for purchasing seafood. Not only can we learn about seafood, but we can also contribute to ocean conservation through our diet!
- Event Sharing: Environmental Protection Bureau‘s ’Zero Waste - Plastic Reduction for a Greener Summer‘ series of activities.
- Event Sharing: National Geographic Magazine’s Ocean Conservation Run.
- Event Sharing: 2023 World Earth Day, Beach Cleaning Together.
