Bunnik Tours is a travel company based in Adelaide, Australia, which specializes in holiday packages and small group tours. They offer a variety of tours with over 360 scheduled departures throughout Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa and the Americas. As an award-winning travel agency, Bunnik Tours aims at creating a “better way of touring” for Australians to explore the world.
Prior to adopting the QNAP TES-3085U, Bunnik Tours used aTS-1263U and TS-1280Uas host servers to run VMware applications.
However, as Bunnik Tours expanded their in-house team andtour services to customers, they realized that their solution was becoming uneconomical and inflexible in terms of speed, stability and availability, and gradually became insufficient for hosting their VMware-based IT Infrastructure. They also experienced an unexpected disk failure and suffered acorrupted RAID. This accident caused their host operating system to shut down, which caused a business interruption. Therefore, Bunnik Tours decided to fully implement an enterprise-grade NAS solution with full capabilities for virtualization and storage applications.
To meet these challenges, Bunnik Tours deployed two QNAP TES-3085UEnterprise-class NAS. Powered by an Intel® Xeon® D processor, the TES-3085U delivers outstanding performance for data transmission andmission-critical applications. The model features dual OS options system inside a single NAS – either the FreeBSD-based QES or Linux-based QTS.
Taking their needs into consideration, Bunnik Tours chose the QES operating system, as it supports the enterprise-level ZFS file system for maximized business continuity.
ZFS is a combined file system and logical volume manager which supports various advanced functions for high-end enterprise storage (for example, a high-performance SSD cache). Bunnik Tours chose an uncompromising all-SSD deployment for both their TES-3085U units to get the highest possible speed and lowest possible latency.
The TES-3085U comes with two built-in 10GbE SFP+ ports. 10GbE connectivity can greatly speed up iSCSI network transfer for virtual machine storage. Bunnik Tours stores their iSCSI LUNs on ZFS-based RAID 6 storage pools. With the aid of 10 GbE network connections, they have experienced a notable increase in data storage speeds. They have also benefited from accelerated file access speeds.
Bunnik Tours use NAKIVO Backup & Replication to back up their on-site and off-site virtual machines, with their previous QNAP NAS devices as backup targets. By deploying the NAKIVO solution on the TES-3085U, they can run backups, replications and recovery at the same time, instead of running the jobs separately. This advantage saves lots of time and effort for Bunnik Tours’ IT staff.
