What is HBS?
HBS (Hybrid Backup Sync) is a comprehensive data backup and disaster recovery solution.
HBS supports backing up, restoring, and syncing data between your local QNAP device and a remote device, external device, or cloud storage space. You can also configure USB One Touch Copy for QNAP NAS devices that have a USB One Touch Copy button.
System requirements
Operating system:
- QTS
- QuTS hero
Before you start
- Log in to QTS or QuTS hero as one of the following user types:
- An administrator
- A user with one of the following delegated roles:
- Backup Management: Allows the user to execute all functions in HBS and manage shared folders.
- Backup Operation: Allows the user to execute all functions in HBS and manage shared folders, but not overwrite or delete existing backup data.
- Ensure HBS is installed in App Center.
- Use the 3-2-1 backup strategy to safeguard your data:
- Keep 3 copies of your data.
- Store 2 copies on different media.
- Store 1 copy off site.
Create a storage space
Creating a storage space in HBS saves the connection and authentication settings of a remote device or cloud storage space.
With saved storage spaces, you can quickly create multiple backup, restore, and sync jobs without having to configure the connection and authentication settings of the storage spaces every time.
- Open HBS and go to Storage Spaces.
- Click Create.
A storage space selection window opens. - Select a remote NAS, remote server, or cloud server.
The Create a Storage Space window opens.NoteFor some cloud storage services, an authentication page may first appear in a separate browser window. - Enter all required fields.
For configuration details, see Storage space creation in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help. - Click Create.
Create a backup job
Backup jobs allow you to back up data in one or more folders on your local NAS to another location.
The destination of a backup job can be another folder on the local NAS, a remote NAS or server, an external device, or a cloud storage space.
For details, see "Enable your NAS as a backup or sync destination" in this article.
- Open HBS and go to Backup & Restore.
- Click Back Up Now and then click New backup job.
The Create a Backup Job wizard opens.NoteIf you have created a backup job before, click Create and then click New backup job. - Select the source and the destination.
- Follow the remaining steps in the wizard.
For job configuration details, see Creating a backup job in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help.
Recover your backed-up data
HBS backups are stored as .qdff folders. You can restore your original files from a .qdff folder by using one of the following applications:
- HBS
- For restoring .qdff folders to a QNAP NAS.
- To restore a .qdff folder, create a restore job in HBS.
For details, see Restore jobs in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help.
- QuDedup Extract Tool
- For restoring .qdff folders on Windows, macOS, or Ubuntu.
- For instruction details, see How do I extract .qdff files using the QuDedup Extract Tool?
Create a sync job
Sync jobs synchronize data between locations. Different sync job types can meet different user needs:
- Two-way sync: Data is mirrored between the local NAS and a remote storage space.
- One-way sync: Data is copied from the local NAS to a remote storage space.
- Active sync: Data is copied from a remote storage space to the local NAS.
For details, see "Enable your NAS as a backup or sync destination" in this article.
- Open HBS and go to Sync.
- Click Sync Now and then select a job type.
The Create a Sync Job wizard opens.NoteIf you have already created a sync job before, click Create and then select a job type. - Select a storage space.
- Follow the remaining steps in the wizard.
For job configuration details, see Sync jobs in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help.
Enable your NAS as a backup or sync destination
To allow your NAS to become a backup or sync destination for other devices, you must enable and configure the relevant services in the Services page in HBS.
- RTRR server
- Proprietary method that can create incremental data transfers.
- Allows another QNAP NAS to back up or sync data to your NAS.
- Rsync server
- Transfers files across networked computers by comparing the modification times and sizes of files.
- Allows a remote server or device to sync data to your NAS via the rsync protocol.
- Time Machine service
- Allows you to store macOS Time Machine backups on your NAS.
For details, see Services in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help.
Configure USB One Touch Copy
If your QNAP NAS model comes with a USB One Touch Copy button and port, you can configure the behavior of pushing the button when a USB device is plugged into the port.
After configuring the button settings, you can quickly transfer data with a single press of the USB One Touch Copy button without needing to manually locate the folders or files you want to transfer every time.
- Open HBS.
- Go to Services > USB One Touch Copy.
- Select an operating mode that determines what happens when the USB One Touch Copy button is pressed.
- Smart Import: Automatically imports new data from the USB device to the NAS.
- USB One Touch Copy: Automatically transfers data between the USB device and the NAS according to the specified settings.
- External Storage Drive (default): Does not perform any action. The USB device is treated as a normal external device.
- If you selected Smart Import or USB One Touch Copy, configure the operating mode settings.
For details on each operating mode and their settings, see Configuring USB One Touch Copy in the Hybrid Backup Sync Web Help. - Click Apply.
