Problem

In Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks, I see the following icon on my disk and when I hover over the icon the message says, "The installed disk is unsuitable for rebuilding RAID Group [number]. Install another disk to rebuild the RAID group."

Why is this happening and how can I resolve it?

Causes & Solutions

1. Insufficient disk capacity

Cause: The disk capacity is too small, which may cause the RAID group to fail to rebuild.

Solution: Replace the disk with another disk with a capacity greater than or equal to the disk with the lowest capacity in the RAID group. It is generally recommended that all disks in a RAID group have the same capacity.

2. S.M.A.R.T. errors

Cause: The disk has S.M.A.R.T. errors.

Solution: Replace the disk with a new disk that has a "Good" S.M.A.R.T. status.

Tip

To check a disk's S.M.A.R.T. status, go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks, select the disk, and then click Health.

3. Other ongoing operations

Cause: The RAID group is currently performing other operations (such as syncing) and therefore is not ready for rebuilding.

Solution: Wait for other operations to complete before initiating the rebuild process.

Tip

If the system does not automatically rebuild the RAID group, you can manually initiate the process:

  1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Storage/Snapshots
  2. Select the storage pool containing the RAID group.
  3. Click Manage.
The storage pool management window opens.
  4. Click Manage > Recover RAID group.
