Why can't I perform SED erase after I moved my SED to another NAS?

Last modified date: 2024-10-14

Applicable Products

  • Storage & Snapshots
  • QTS, QuTS hero

Cause

If your self-encrypting drive (SED) was previously used in another QNAP NAS and currently still has data from the previous NAS, the current NAS will deem the SED to be in use and disallow performing SED erase. As a result, the SED erase function in Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks > Action will not be available.

Solution

To make the SED erase function available again, the SED's used type status must be "Free". That is, the SED must not be in use by the system. You can check this status under the "Used Type" column in Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks.

To free up the SED, you can perform one of the following actions:

  • Replace the SED with a spare disk.
    Note
This method is only available if you have configured a spare disk.
    1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks.
    2. Select the SED.
    3. Click Action > Replace.
  • Remove the storage pool.
    Note
    • Only administrators can perform this task.
    • All data in the storage pool will be deleted. Back up any important data before you proceed.
    1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Storage/Snapshots.
    2. Select the parent storage pool of the SED.
    3. Click Manage.
The storage pool management window opens.
    4. Click Action > Remove Pool.
  • Detach the SED from its RAID group.
    Note
    • This method is only available if the RAID group is of type RAID 1, 5, 6, or 10.
    • You must install the SED into another slot after detaching it, because the current slot will become reserved for installing another disk to rebuild the RAID group.
    1. Go to Storage & Snapshots > Storage > Disks/VJBOD > Disks.
    2. Select the SED.
    3. Click Action > Detach.
