Why snapshot from thin volume will cause storage pool oversubscription easily?

The Snapshots are directly saved on the available space in the Storage Pool. If you have configured Pool Guaranteed Snapshot space the snapshot will be saved in this space and will be retained reserved for snapshot files only.

Now if you have created a thin volume in the Storage Pool it will use space on-demand which means they take space from the Storage Pool only as data is written to the volume.

Oversubscription occurs when the data on the thin volume takes larger space capacity than the storage space allocated for the volume and the snapshot will back up the data which is the same size of the oversubscribed volume.

To solve this issue, you may try to:

  • Delete the old snapshots to free more pool space for taking the new snapshot or
  • Expanding the storage pool capacity
